FAQ's

What are the health benefits of Calamondins?

As with all citrus, Calamondins are rich in Vitamin C, natural citrus oil and natural pectin (an antioxidant) and fiber. Unlike most citrus, our products use the whole fruit, so you get the full benefit of its goodness. Legend has it that they calm the upset stomach and when rubbed on, relieve the itch of mosquito bites. In the Philippines it is used to remove ink stains from fabrics and as a body deodorant and shampoo. (http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/calamondin.html)

How do I remember the name 'Calamondin'?

I think it helps to break down the word:

Cala: like calorie, which means energy.

Mondin: like monde or earth.

Energy from the earth. Now that’s easy to remember.

This fruit looks familiar. Are there other names for it?

The most common other name for this fruit is Calamansi. This is how it is known in the Philippines, where it is picked while green. Part of the mystique and confusion regarding Calamondin/Calamansi are its multiple monikers. Here is the most complete list we could find: Kalamansi, Calamondin Orange, Scarlet Lime, Golden Lime, Chinese Orange, Miniature Orange, Panama Orange, and Lemoncito. If you know of any others, please share them with us!

Can I buy Calamondin fruit for my own recipes?

Yes, if you live in Florida. We grow herbicide and pesticide free fruit and are working on obtaining organic certification for our groves. Because of citrus diseases, such as canker and black spot, all citrus fruit leaving the state of Florida is required by the USDA to be dipped in a bactericide/fungicide. While we respect USDA safe practice, we believe food should have fewer toxins, not more. So, we choose not to dip our fruit, making it ineligible for out-of-state shipping. Should this requirement change, or should the USDA offer what we consider a less toxic dipping option, we will be happy to revisit this policy. Our prepared products can be shipped anywhere in the US.

I would love to grow my own Calamondin tree. Do you sell seeds or plants?

Yes, if you live in Florida. We are happy to sell and ship seeds anywhere within the state of Florida. If you have a Florida address for us to ship to, please contact us at info@calamondincafe.com and we will be happy to work with you. Our seedling nursery is in its infancy, but we hope to have plants available for purchase within the next two years.

Is there a Calamondin Season?

Yes, but trees will bear small amounts of fruit year round. The majority of the fruit sets over the summer and ripens between September and January, with peak months around November and December. There seems to be a second much smaller peak in Spring around May and June.
